How EMRTC Lights up the Night Sky at Fourth of July Fireworks Show

For 18 minutes on the Fourth of July, thousands of spectators in Socorro see brilliant colors fill the night sky, hear music echoing in the valley, and experience a vibrant and joyous celebration of our Independence Day.
What most in the audience don’t see is what happens before the first shell is launched: months of planning, about 60 volunteers and nearly 600 hours of labor.
Behind this year's dazzling display were dedicated team members from the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC), Performing Arts Series (PAS), and the Macey Center at New Mexico Tech, working alongside the City of Socorro, Socorro County, the Socorro Police Department, the Socorro Fire Department, the Socorro County Fire Department, Wildland Fire personnel, and the staff of the Socorro Rodeo & Sports Complex. Together, they transformed months of planning into one unforgettable evening for the community.
Here’s how it unfolded, month by month, firework by firework, according to Meliton Flores, the Acting Associate Director of Applied Research & Technology at EMRTC, and Dylan Nelson, research engineer at EMRTC.
Months of Preparation
Planning for the annual fireworks show begins long before Independence Day arrives. The process starts with selecting the music, followed by choreographing each firework to the soundtrack, creating a carefully synchronized show where every launch is timed to complement the music.
This year's production required approximately 600 hours of labor from EMRTC personnel, including engineers, ordnance technicians, test range operators, safety officers and NMT students.
Precision Behind Every Launch
The audience experienced an exciting, seamless display, but every firework is the result of careful engineering and meticulous planning.
This year's show featured about 145 different types of fireworks, launched using nearly 700 precisely timed cues. Many of those cues triggered fireworks that launch multiple shells sequentially from a single trigger rather than a single firework, producing thousands of individual effects during the performance. And all fireworks were controlled through a wireless computerized system that synchronized every launch with the music.
Behind the scenes, engineers designed the firing sequence, ordnance specialists programmed and tested the firing system, and crews carefully positioned launch equipment throughout the display area. Every firing module was tested to verify communications before the show began, ensuring each effect would perform exactly as intended.
Safety Comes First
While the fireworks create a spectacular celebration, safety remains the highest priority—from the earliest planning stages through final cleanup. EMRTC applies the same disciplined approach used in explosive research and testing to the fireworks display. This even includes weather monitoring. Following the final launch, crews remain on site to inspect the launch area, remove debris, and restore the grounds, ensuring the event concludes as safely as it began.
A Community Effort
The annual fireworks show represents far more than a public celebration—it is a true community partnership.
The event brings together engineers, technicians, students, public safety professionals, facilities personnel, finance staff, and many other support groups working toward a common goal: providing a safe, memorable Independence Day celebration for the Socorro community.
For New Mexico Tech students, the event also serves as an opportunity to gain real-world experience while working alongside experienced engineers, technicians, and explosives professionals on a large-scale public event.
Flores and Nelson say that while EMRTC's day-to-day mission supports national security and research, the annual fireworks show is a rare opportunity to give something so visible and memorable back to the Socorro community. It’s a gift that lights up the skies over Socorro and brings joy to all who attend.
